The University is one of the oldest in India, which was established by the Governor General on Nov 25, 1920.
Sir Harcourt Butler laid the foundation stone of the University on March 19, 1921, and Dr. Gyanendra Nath Chakravarti became its first vice-chancellor. On July 17, 1921 teaching classes commenced.
