Movie Review of English Vinglish

Known for films like, `Mr India`, `Chandni` and `Lamhe`, Sridevi is back on silver screen with `English Vinglish` after a long sabbatical of 15 years. She was last seen in 1994 film, `Laadla` opposite Anil Kapoor.

Sridevi who plays a de-glam character of `Shashi Godbole`, a middle-aged Maharashtrian housewife in Gauri Shinde`s film, `English Vinglish`, is passionate about making ladoos and earns money out of her small business. The character of Shashi is very relatable and many Indian housewives will definitely identify themselves with her character, who does everything for their family without even complaining once, but are not given the due respect in return just because they are a housewife and cannot speak English fluently.

Shashi faces the same situation in the film. Her husband, played by Adil Hussain, and her little daughter who studies in 7th classs, do not respect her real talent and are ashamed to introduce her to people around them.

Director Gauri Shinde has very intelligently introduced the character of Shashi in the film and thus relating with Sridevi`s character becomes more easier.

Shashi then flies to New York for five weeks to help in her neice`s wedding, (played by Priya Anand), where she decides to join a crash course in English after facing an embarrasing situation in a cafe where she is not able to place her order.

Soon, Shashi becomes a dedicated student, does all her homework and starts watching English films at night to brush up her skills in the language.

Meanwhile, Shashi`s classmate- a Frenchman named Laurent, played by Mehdi Nebbou, gets attracted towards Shashi`s simple personality, and asks her out for coffee but his attempts go in vain as Shashi, is the ideal Indian wife and mother.

Slowly and gradualy Shashi masters her skills in the foreign language, leaving a clear message that complete dedication can definitely lead to success, which proves inspiring for aspirants wanting to master the language.

Gauri Shinde clearly deserves applause for writting such a simple and unique storyline and directing it beautifully.

This film gives a clear message that being a mother and wife is not a small role. The lady takes care of her family which forms a base of a good society, but this is a thankless job.

Anupam Kher who called Sridevi `original queen of cinema`, in his recent tweet, was definitely right in all ways as the actress is back with a bang. She deserves kudos for portraying the character of `Shashi` flawlessly, making it so close to reality with her innocence. Other cast members - Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou, Priya Anand have also done a good job.

Amitabh Bachchan makes a guest appearance in the film, which leaves you wanting for more.

So, go out and watch `English Vinglish` as this film is a complete family entertainer.
